Our History
Wedgewood: A Social Justice Community is rooted in a rich history of progressive faith and dedicated service. Established in 1956 under the sponsorship of Park Road Baptist Church, Wedgewood was formally recognized in 1958. Throughout its evolution, Wedgewood has embraced inclusivity, diversity, and advocacy, becoming a unique congregation that prioritizes meaningful engagement with marginalized communities and the promotion of social justice.
Progressive Leadership & Advocacy
From the beginning, Wedgewood set itself apart as a progressive and inclusive congregation, advocating for women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other marginalized groups. It was the first Baptist church in North Carolina to leave the Southern Baptist Convention over issues of gender and LGBTQ+ inclusion. This commitment to inclusivity extends to interfaith collaboration, with a diverse membership that includes people from various religious and non-religious backgrounds.
Pandemic Response and Adaptation
The COVID-19 pandemic marked a pivotal chapter in Wedgewood’s history. Responding to escalating food insecurity, the congregation transformed its food pantry into a drive-through operation that served over 400 families weekly. Eventually, Wedgewood partnered with Hearts United for Good, which now continues this vital program at a new location. During the pandemic, Wedgewood also transitioned to virtual services, returning briefly to in-person gatherings in 2022 before fully embracing a hybrid model in 2023. Sunday morning services are now held online, with in-person events focusing on service projects, community meet-ups, and celebrations of faith and justice.
